Good Faith Estimate

You have the right to receive an estimate explaining the expected cost of your care.

Effective

Who can receive an estimate

If you do not have health insurance, or choose to pay for care without using it, you can request a written Good Faith Estimate of expected charges. This helps you understand costs before receiving non-emergency care.

When to ask

Tell the office that you will be paying without insurance and request an estimate before care. In general, an estimate is provided when eligible care is scheduled at least three business days ahead, or when you request one. Ask the office about the timing that applies to your appointment.

What the estimate means

An estimate describes expected charges; it is not a bill or a requirement to receive services. Keep a copy and compare it with the charges you receive. Ask the office to explain the estimated services, fees and any updates to your expected care.

If your bill is higher

If charges from a provider are at least $400 above that provider’s estimate, you may qualify for the federal patient–provider dispute resolution process. A dispute generally must begin within 120 calendar days of the initial bill. Eligibility requirements apply; review the current CMS guidance for instructions.
